Drexel Garba
Approx. 200-250 people
The annual Drexel Garba is the official garba for Drexel students. We partner up with DISHA, the Drexel Indian Student Association, and Pragathi, the graduate Indian Student Association, to celebrate the Hindu holiday of Navratri. Unlike most Indian student associations at other universities, we hire an actual live band, which adds to the overall experience of the event. Students dance the night away in their traditional Indian garments while they get in touch with their cultural side. Since this event occurs within the first few weeks of school, students from all over come. This event has been a popular meet and greet for new students from the four major universities of the city. Always an enjoyable night, the Drexel Garba has been one of our longest and most anticipated traditions.
Diwali Dinner
Approx. 100-150 people
The Diwali Dinner happens every year, usually before our members leave for Christmas break. This event celebrates the Hindu holiday of Diwali with a catered dinner from a local Indian restaurant. It is a way for us to meet up and enjoy one last dinner together before we all depart for break. Students from previous years have loved this event because of the great food. People who are not even Hindu come to enjoy the delicious food.
Dating Auction
Approx. 150 people
The annual VOICE Dating Auction occurs right before Valentine’s Day. Students from each Drexel class, each fraternity and sorority, and Temple and the University of Sciences in Philadelphia volunteer to be auctioned off to the highest bidder for a date. The majority of the proceeds go directly to charity, while the rest helps fund our annual VOICE show in April. Students from each of the 4 major schools in the city of Philadelphia come out to support their representatives and just to have an entertaining time. The highest bidder receives a gift certificate to a nearby restaurant to take his date to after the show. The VOICE Dating Auction has been a crowd favorite for many years to come and it is one of the few times that much of Indian population in the city of Philadelphia is one room. Mr. Philly’s Finest
Approx. 150 people
Mr. Philly’s Finest is VOICE’s annual male beauty pageant. Just like the dating auction, students from each Drexel class, each fraternity and sorority, and Temple and the University of Sciences in Philadelphia participate and compete to be crowned “Mr. Philly’s Finest”. Students from each of the 4 major schools in the city of Philadelphia come out to support their representatives and just to have an entertaining time. Each participant must participate in the talent portion of the show, in which they demonstrate their unique talents to the audience. Judges decide who the final man standing will be and be crowned “Mr. Philly’s Finest”. This annual event has been a popular event within the Indian community, and it attracts students from all over, including Delaware and New Jersey.
Annual Voice Show
Approx. 850 people
The Variety Of Indian Cultural Expressions (VOICE) is an organization conceived with the objective of representing India and the Indo-American community to the Drexel University campus and greater Philadelphia area. The VOICE show highlights India's cultural richness and diversity through a cast of more than 100 students showcasing their talent in dance, music, and performing arts. This event is one of the most widely attended events of its kind at Drexel University, attracting crowds from Philadelphia, New Jersey, and New York. With its continuing success each year, the cultural show has become an opportunity for students, parents, and local businesses to come together and unite the South Asian community.
The VOICE Semi-Formal
Approx. 150-200 people
The VOICE Semi-Formal is the last major event of the year. Students from the four major universities of Philadelphia attend this event; however it truly is a way for Drexel students to give the graduating seniors their final farewell. Every year VOICE books a grand ballroom within the city limits for this event to occur. We enjoy a great dinner and an entertaining DJ throughout the night. This event is VOICE’s way to give back to their members and it has created many lasting memories over the years.
